It is the objective of this dissertation to study the teaching in the academic training of young learners of conducting, aiming at their performance, the search for a true performance, their freedom of choice and individualism, their limitations, their rapport with the orchestra and the conditions, hindrances, and liberties that they might have in the practice of their work. In order to reach that objective, we have made use of a bibliography based especially on the testimony of renowned musicians, as well as on interviews conducted with three noted contemporary Brazilian conductors. The data collected aim at finding the answer to the numerous variables which are presented to the conductor as an interpreter, to the way the activity is seen by them in the various professional situations, and, after amassing such information, it is our goal to offer a step forward in the broad discussion which is the interpretation of a conductor before a living and thinking musical organism.
