Resumo: This study aimed to understand the skills of health professionals in educational practices in Type 2 Diabetes in Primary Care, to help improve metabolic control. This is a qualitative case study conducted with health professionals who work at the Family Health Strategy (FHS) and the Support Center for Family Health (NASF), inserted in four Health Centers in the city of Belo Horizonte (MG), 2010. A total of ten health professionals participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups to meet and discuss the daily practices of education in type 2 diabetes and skills of each professional involved in teaching and learning process, besides the factors that act as facilitators or barriers to self-education in diabetes. The results were processed and analyzed using content analysis and were organized based on the empirical identification of the following categories: 1) Importance of Educational Practices; 2) Teamwork; 3) Knowledge; 4) Skills; and 5) Attitudes. This study shows the importance of reorienting the skills of health professionals in the practices in diabetes education through training, continuing education and the strengthening of teamwork in order to establish strategies to promote prevention and disease control.
