The thesis presents an ethnography of four encampments of Calon, a population of Romanies (Gypsies), in Minas Gerais, describing how Gypsy relations are sewn together by kinship, gender and movement. Negotiating alliances, circulating things and people, making husbands and wives are shown to be motors of the community life within settlements and of the life cycle of Calon persons – the childhood development phase, the passage into adulthood through marriage, marriages and separations, death and its treatment. With a focus on the world of Calon women (Calins) – and exploring what can be described as multiple forms of their birth – the thesis captures the Gypsy way of being in, and acting upon, the world, which has women at its centre.
