Resumo: The development of construction creates demand for products and construction technologies that ensure better performance and durability. In this sense, this work aims to experimental verification of the influence of particle size and shape of the fine aggregate in the performance of coating mortars, both fresh, as in the hardened state. The particle packing was evaluated by loose bulk density of the size distribution curves of ABNT NBR 248:2003 and each sieve individually. Then the mechanical analysis and durability indicators of mortars through specimens made of natural and artificial aggregates was made, considering the particle size distribution curves: ABNT NBR 248:2003, Carneiro (1999) and Reed (1995). The following tests were performed at the ages of 7, 21 and 28 days: true density loose; consistency; mass density and entrained air content in the fresh state; resistance to axial compression and tensile strength in bending; dynamic modulus of elasticity; potential resistance to traction grip; bulk density in the hardened state; surface porosity; by water absorption and capillary and stereoscopic microscope and optical microscope images. In general, it was evidenced that the grain size distribution and type of aggregate influence the analyzed properties and should be considered during the dosing process and specification of these composites.
