Resumo: | This research work seeks to understand how intracultural communication among Brazilian teachers and students differs from intercultural communication among Brazilian students and American teachers, from the concrete level of interactions, and which sociocultural aspects are related to these differences. In order to reach this objective, contextualization cues and interpretative frames related to them are analyzed. Subsequently, the social and cultural background which serves as a basis for interpretative frames used by Brazilian and American participants is outlined. The database is formed by: a) shootings of English classes, in language courses, taught by Brazilian and American teachers to Brazilian students and b) interviews with American English teachers. The qualitative research methodology is based on a comprehensive description of selected data and on micro and macro analyses accomplished under etic and emic perspectives. Our results show differences concerning aspects such as directness and indirectness, politeness and, on a more general level, different space configurations for Brazilians and Americans. As for the conclusion, ways in which cultural aspects could be taught in English classes are mentioned. |
