Resumo: | Descriptive Translation Studies, and more specifically the sub-area of Corpus-based Translation Studies, have recently focused on the style of professional ad literary translators, and addressed the translators discursive presence in the translated text as a result. These studies have also examined large translation corpora in order to identify possible features of translated texts. Affiliated to this research strand, the present study examines stylistic traits of translators. It focuses on the presentation of speech, writing and thought in the novel Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, and two of its translations into Brazilian Portuguese, Coração das Trevas, by Sergio Flaksman, and No Coração das Trevas, by José Roberto O'Shea. The research questions that motivated the study have been proposed by Baker (2000). Theyaddress issues such as: Does the translator prefer certain linguistic structures regardless of the author's style? Are these choices related to the linguistic system or text types of the languages involved? If the answers to both questions are positive can the preferences identified in the translated text be justified by the translators ideological stance?. The theoretical framework adopted is that of Corpus-based Translation Studies. The identification of patterns in the translated texts, attributed to the translators style and not to the linguistic constraints of theEnglish/Portuguese pair, take on board what was postulated by Toury (1980, 2000) and Baker (1993, 1996, 2000). The study is also based on the model developed by Semino & Short (2004) to track speech, writing and thought (sub)categories in texts originally written in English. The methodological procedures include quantitative data analysis obtained with the software Wordsmith Tools© 5.0 and manual annotation of speech, writing and thought presentation categories and subcategories from Semino & Short (2004). The results point out that speech is the most frequent type of discourse in the corpus. They also indicate that thestudy of speech introductory clauses, in particular, can reveal traits of style in narrative fiction translated into Brazilian Portuguese. Occurrences of speech, writing and thought categories and subcategories identified in translated texts, as compared to those in the original, vary greatly in absolute numbers, when instances of the same type of discourse as compared to instances of different types of discourse are taken into account. Occurrences of different choices made by the translators were found. Translators use mainly explicitation and omission to introduce shifts in the translated text. It is, however, premature to assign these different choices to an ideological stance on the part of translators. Results point out that characteristics of translated texts, such as explicitation, might be closely related to the translators style,having varied its occurrence in the translated texts. Results also show that, in general, the author's style seems to influence the choices made by translators even though it does not determine them. |
