Resumo: | The occurrence of a disease that is potentially deadly such as breast cancer, which entailsignificant body changes over the time of its treatment like hair loss and breast amputation are likely to make the patients associate such an event with their past psychological distresses like previous losses, separations, punishments for mistakes committed, and so. The difficult to adhere to treatment routines and the refusal to undergo serious medical procedures to save their own lives has often been impairing their treatment and their own lives. Such a situation may have made them wonder about the role of the ego in falling ill, and the role of the self-esteem in accepting the treatment and/or his/her prospective own death. Would that be a self-centered seclusion brought forth by the disease as a self-defensive measure supposedly taken by the ego, or because the feeling of an imminent oneself failure? Why is it so important for the psyche to keep ones body integrity even when it has been threatened by its own death? All these issues point to the ego in its everlasting construction, its interactions, and its failure. Based on the clinical reports of the cases attended at the Mastology Center of the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and on the Freudian and Post-Freudian literature we will strive to examine the ego as a bodily projection onto the psyche. |
