Resumo: Surgery is the treatment of choice in regional control of mammary neoplasms in female dogs. Numerous surgical techniques may be used, as long they respect the anatomy of the mammary gland of the bitch, the lymphatic drainage and the known prognostic factors previously described in the literature. In this work, the study of the aspects related to postoperative of patients that underwent radical and regional mastectomy, aims to demonstrate the clinical disadvantages conferred to the patient when aggressive surgical techniques are performed with prophylactic intent. Therefore, eighteen dogs were properly selected for each technique. Patients were evaluated for pos-surgical pain (nociception), hematological, postoperative complications and impact on quality of life. Besides being subjected to a longer surgical time, the group treated with radical mastectomy showed more intense physiological changes and higher scores on scales of nociception, being observed higher incidence of postoperative complications and greater impact on quality of life. From this study it was concluded that, since there are not sufficient data that suggested an increased risk for the development of new malignant lesions in dogs with a history of breast cancer, mammary tumors should be treated with the simplest surgical procedure necessary for the complete removal of the tumor and associated lymphoid tissue, thereby furthering the postoperative recovery and quality of life of the patient.
