Resumo: Population growth and the increase in demand for consumer goods lead to an increase in the number of industrial activities, which can generate wastes that causes significant environmental imbalances. The role of government agencies is to inspect and to guide the compliance of existing regulations in the steps of the industrial waste management, including the storage of wastes. The present work aims to elaborate a reference protocol for the storage of industrial waste in industries located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and to evaluate the current storage of industrial wastes in enterprises in Minas Gerais. For the execution of this work different kinds of industries were chosen, technical visits were carried out and questionnaires were applied. The data obtained in field added to the data of environmental licensing and the data previously declared in the Industrial Solid Waste Inventory were used to the evaluation of the industrial wastes in the state of Minas Gerais and to develop a reference protocol. The evaluation of the enterprises was based on the sum of pre-established criteria from two regulatory normatives related to the area designated for waste storage from ABNT. Weights were attributed to the normative criteria by a group of specialists making it possible to obtain a grade from zero to ten for each company analyzed in order to classify the industries in inadequate, regular or proper conditions according to the score received. It was assessed that 57,7% of the enterprises showed inadequate conditions, 19,2% presented regular conditions and only 23,1% demonstrated proper conditions of the storage area. It is noted that in none of the industries studied the compliance of all criteria related to storage area is totally fulfilled. The majority of industry managers (81%) think its necessary the elaboration of a reference protocol and only 42% of people interviewed have knowledge of the normatives that regulate storage areas. It was verified that all data declared in the Industrial Solid Waste Inventory was consistent to what was reported in field and from twenty six companies listed in the research none have had legal requirement from the environmental agency to fulfill the normative related to the industrial waste storage area. The reference protocol was produced and made available to the industry managers through a partnership with the Environmental Agency
