Resumo: | This research main objective is to propose a management protocol for waste electric and electronic equipment to Belo Horizonte city. In order to reach that, this study was divided in three different phases. In the first was quantified the volume of residuals generated from electric and electronic equipment adopted as unit of study: refrigerators, freezers, televisions, computers and mobile telephones. Those equipment were chosen based on data availability from Minas Gerais domiciles, because they are growing in sales volume and have potential toxic to the environment when improperly discarded too. In the second phase, interviews and visits were made to the actors involved in post-consumer chain of such equipment. The third and last phase was the drafting of the management protocol itself. In terms of methodology a quantitative research approach was adopted, as well as exploratory qualitative and descriptive qualitative. The quantitative research allowed quantifying the volume of waste generated. The exploratory qualitative provided to the researcher to be acquainted with the subject, and the descriptive qualitative allowed to know and interpret the reality without interfering in it to modify it. The estimation of 153.000 tons of waste generated from those equipment for the period 2008 to 2023, as calculated in this study, shows the necessity of establishing a management system to WEEE. The research results highlighted that the main destination given by consumers for the disposal of such waste is the donation, which does not imply a suitable destination to that waste, since this alternative may be interpreted as a way to transfer the problem to another user. The visits to cooperatives of recyclable materials collectors, to companies that sell those and municipal landfill prove that this waste occurs in large scale and there is no appropriate environmental management in the city. In this manner the purpose on drafting the management protocol was to propose adjustments in the current municipal system of urban cleaning, allowing not only lower costs to implement the actions comprised in the protocol, but also the establishment of partnerships with cooperatives ofrecyclable materials collectors, enabling social inclusion. It was concluded that the protocol developed and proposed in this research can guide not only the city of Belo Horizonte, but also other Brazilian municipalities in the proper management of such waste, contributing not only to reduce the impacts caused by the improper disposal of it, but alsoadding more value to the sales price of those sorted materials |
