This dissertation aims to analyze the editorial policy of the Department of Historical and Artistic Heritage (SPHAN) between 1937, the year that the agency was founded, and 1945, the year that marks the end of the Estado Novo regime, and precedes the first administrative reform of the institution. Composed by the Revista do SPHAN and the Publicações do SPHAN, the editorial policy directed by Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade occupied an editorial pleading articulates with the Brazilian tradition, but at the same time innovator in the selected theme - national monuments.This research aims to examine the central place occupied by this initiative in the editorial statement of the new agency to protect the historical and artistic heritage, revealing the tensions involving the selection process of authors and material production issues as well as distribution. Finally we will examine the articles and monographs published in order to identify the various representations of the nation through the monuments identified.
