Resumo: This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between the contemporary field and the tragic through Diary of the Fall written by Michel Laub. To do so, in the second chapter we will analyze studies on tragedy and the tragic with the intention of building a conceptual approach in connection with our objectives. In a third moment, we will read Diary of the Fall with the help of the theoretical contribution developed in the preceding chapter. The purpose of this chapter is to emphasize the existence of a tragic subject inhabiting the novel of Michel Laub. In the fourth chapter, the idea of a contemporary field will be developed. We will also make links between contemporaneity, a certain set of authors of contemporary Brazilian literature and the tragic subject. Contemporaneity is understood through a set of theoretical texts that emphasizes exteriority, lightness and narcissism, as well as the prevalence of spatial vectors over the time, as marks of the period. These characteristics clash with the elements that make up the tragic subject, opposing contemporaneity therefore.
