Resumo: | Since the maned wolf repertoire was described in the 1980s, research on the species started to focus mainly on its feeding habits, habitat use and diseases, and there hasnt been any more studies on its acoustic behavior. The objective of this study was to describe the vocal repertoire of the maned wolf in captivity and investigate the contexts in which the call types are used to determine its functions, reviewing the existing literature. 935 calls from 10 adult maned wolves were described qualitatively using the International Phonetic Alphabet and quantitatively by six variables: vocal duration, peak frequency, maximum amplitude location, 3rdquartile time location, 3rd quartile frequency location and fundamental frequency. They were separated into 10 call types. Eventually, the vocalizations were combined into composed calls. Even though the maned wolf is a solitary species, it has presented a call type richness similar to social canid species. The maned wolf repertoire is in accordance with motivation-structural rules and the principle ofantithesis, and some vocalizations presented non-linear phenomena. |
