Resumo: This thesis addresses the student and youth condition of university students in the context of expansion and internalization of the Brazilian public university, as well as the relationship established by young students between present and future. This is a case study conducted at the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri UFVJM/ Campus do Mucuri, whose methodological route included the realization of bibliographic research for knowledge of the state of the art on the theme and construction of the theoretical-conceptual of this study; the documentary research, to knowledge of legislation affects higher education, as well as documents that deal with the creation, implementation and operation of UFVJM; participant observation in the routine of the campus, travel with students, seminars and other academic events; the application of questionnaire, with students entered the period between 2008 and 2010; and the realization of interviews with six college students of UFVJM. This study is crisscrossed by approaches in the sociology of youth and the sociology of education according to its object and subject corresponding to it, the university students. From this crossing resulted the necessity to know the young people beyond the dimension strictly student, seeking to apprehend elements of its youthful condition. Research shows that in contexts such as those of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys - regions of lower social and economic development of the state of Minas Gerais, with limited conditions of schooling and living with intellectual and artistic objects of hegemonic culture - the creation of a public university brings major impacts on the experiences and trajectories of young people in the region, expanding their horizon of possibilities as well as the student condition tends to subordinate the experience and youth identity of university students about their experience and ways of life as students.
