Resumo: Demands for information, bibliographic sources and library services of the users of the SCS/UFPr Library and its performance to meet such demands were studied by means of a questionnaire. A proportional stratified sample of 20% of the 1.024 users was selected to include lecturers, undergraduate and graduate students. The literature review was based on studies of use and users to define the demands, methodology, description of Brazilian situation and draw conclusions from previous researches. Two kinds of test were used: a) correlation coefficient to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and b) Chi- square to test the differences between the groups of users to the significance level of 0.05. The results are given through the description and analysis of the differences, and reveal the characteristics of the users and their demands. The majority of the users range from young to up to 35 years of foreign languages. Assiduity to the library varies in respect to age but not to category of user. The groups of users do not show a meaningful difference for their reasons to visit the library. Updating and solution to problems related to medical practice are the most frequent reasons stated. There is, however, a distinction concerning the objectives and demands for sources of information. The requirements of lecturers tend to concentrate on specialized periodicals in the field of medicine, while those of post-graduate students on indexes and of undergraduates, books. The most requested services are lending and reprography (Xerox) as well as reading on the same degree of success in their demands on the services provided and on the performance of the library as a whole. The satisfaction level of 60% is a common factor. A revision oh the collection development and circulation polices is suggested. Likewise, the promotion of little used services and decisions concerning working hours of the library, plus further research on the subject are recommended.
