Resumo: | This dissertation studies the use of faceted taxonomy as an instrument of organization of information in order to give consistency and standardization to informational contents of university papers. Its aim was to facilitate the access to information, offering to users the possibility to navigate through the terms of the faceted structure, presented in a search interface. We had as input thesis and dissertations which followed the line of research Organization and Use of Information of the digital library of thesis and dissertations (BDTD)of the Information Science College (ECI) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The empirical object were the ten fundamental thematic categories and the terms which fed them, coming from the conceptual analysis carried out in the information summaries of the university papers of the corpus. The objective of this study was also to make up a navigatingfaceted taxonomy, called TAFNAVEGA, from a category matrix developed for university works, aiming to demonstrate its adequacy to the systematized and semantic representation of the content of thesis and dissertations. In addition to that, this work intends to contribute for more visibility of the content of scientific researches, and to facilitate the search and retrieval of this information. The methodology encompasses procedures of exploratory and empirical nature, with a qualitative approach in relation to the analysis of the literature of that field. Besides, it made use of the method of applied research, inasmuch as it showed amechanism to be used in faceted navigation. This methodological route included the use of the theory of domain analysis to identify the domain, the BDTD user, and his information needs, as well as the Model of Documentary Reading, by Fujita and Rubi (2006) for the development of the category matrix for university works. For the creation of the fundamental thematic categories were used the method of content analysis, the technique of the thematic category analysis, together with the principles of the theory of faceted analysis of Ranganathan. The literature review was based on papers about faceted navigation throughfaceted taxonomies, used as instrument to explore, search and retrieve information in different digital libraries. The grounding based itself on knowledge related to search and retrieval in information retrieval systems, approaching the vocabulary of the taxonomy type, the digital libraries, focusing on thesis and dissertation libraries, and the hypertextual navigation, showing this through faceted taxonomy. The results demonstrated that the mechanism TAFNAVEGA facilitated the task of exploration, search and retrieval of content of documents, giving access to data such as theories, methods and instruments of data gathering, enabling the combination of these different pieces of information. We conclude that the possibility of search improvement through the structure of the navigating faceted taxonomy helps the user to explore the results of finished researches, inasmuch as it provides more visibility to the content available in the digital library of thesis and dissertations, without overloading it with information. |
