Resumo: Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonosis that is booming in the city of Belo Horizonte. Since the introduction of this zoonosis, control strategies have been discussed not resulting in the deployment of an effective program to combat. The professional public and private sectors have different views about the intervention in this disease. This study aimed at understanding the social representation of clinical veterinary professionals connected to the small animal veterinary clinic, teaching and public sector of zoonoses, when the control measures, treatment and social issues that permeate the canine leishmaniasis. It was used as a theoretical framework consisting of the Social Representation verbalization of concepts that the individual has the world around him, where it detects up knowledge, values, ideologies and contradictions, fundamental for understanding the process of determining health and disease. We conducted semi-structured interviews that were analyzed by analysis of yet. It was observed that the different representations of public and private sector as the control strategies. The professionals engaged in public health indicate and bring the sacrifice of the dog, recognizing the importance of euthanasia in the effective control of the disease. For professionals in private practice, treating canine has become a viable measure for the control of dogs assintomaáticos still remaining in the reservoir for the disease condition. While public service professionals jointly prioritize the control of the reservoir and vector, the professionals of the private clinic emphasize the vector. It was concluded that there is no uniformity in the representation of aspects of the epidemiological model of American Visceral Leishmaniasis. Some professionals prefer the aspect of public health while others value the animal as a patient
