Resumo: The aim of this study was to esteem the prevalence of the canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Mateus Leme County, Minas Gerais, 2008. In 2005 and 2007 were recorded in Secretaria Municipal de Saúde two human cases, suggesting a prevalence higer than 3% of positive dogs, according to Manual de Vigilância e Controle da leishmaniose visceral, M.S. 2006. Then were collected 1.467 samples of canine blood from final circulation on ear extremity, in filter paper, and it was made exam of Indirect Immunofluorecence Reaction (RIFI), considering positives the samples with reagent levels higher or equal to 1:40. In the dubious cases it was used the Kalazar Detect test (KD), as a confirmatory test. To the collect of the urban área it was used the sorological reaserch with stratified samples in 25 places of vaccination against hydrophobia, in the day of immunization through municipal campaign of vaccination against canine hydrophobia. In rural área, the collects were made together with the health communitarian agents in the vaccination campaign from rural zone of the county. To know the characteristics of the canine population it was applied a questionnaire to each sample collected, which datas were processed in the Epi Info v6, and the subjects were made in excel 2003. It was observed a global prevalence of 7.02% of sorological positives canines and 10,78% of sorological suspects canines to LV, characterizing Mateus Leme County as a receptive area and a area of intense transmission to this canine visceral leishmaniasis, according to the oficial classification of the Ministry of Health. The Knowledge obtained on the canine leishmaniasis prevalence allows to establish effective strategies to control actions
