Os significados do dinheiro e do trabalho: um estudo com os operários da construção de edificações de Belo Horizonte/MG

The literature has been characterized the meanings of money and work as multidimensional phenomena imbued with contradictory aspects reflecting the dialectical character present there, as well as the contradictions of capitalist society. Considering the importance that both phenomena represent in capitalist societies, it has been the objective of this research to explore the relat ionship between the significations of the money and work, under the context of building construction. For this purpose, was conducted an empirical research in two organizations that works in the construction of buildings in the city of Belo Horizonte (MG), composing an amount of 302 workers. Opting for methodological triangulation, were established two strategies: structured questionnaires were applied - The Meaning of Work Inventory (STI), The Meaning of Money Scale (ESD II) and socio demographic form - to survey the symbolic aspects of the phenomena and characterization of the sample and were also conducted semistructured interviews, consultation for documents and registration of experience in data collection (field journal) with the aim of better characterize the context of the occupational category studied. To explore the relationship between the phenomena discussed here, were performed linear regression analysis (stepwise) having as independent variables the aspects that compose the meanings of work (types valoratives, descriptives and relative centrality of work) as a control variable, the time of work in civil construction and as a dependent variable, the meaning of money. Also was constructed a cross-table between the patterns of the meaning of work and money and was applied the chi square test. The results showed a relation between the components of both phenomena, but in a partial way, which indicates, for workers for the construction of buildings, there are others aspects of live, besides the work, that interfere in the process of signification of money.
