Resumo: | The aim of this study is to research the relation established between the inhabitants of the city of Mariana and the local public primary school from 1816 to 1848, a moment marked by important transformations both in the political and social arena in Brazil. So as to carry out such investigation, letters sent the Secretary of Government of the Province of Minas Gerais, found in Arquivo Público Mineiro, letters and minutes of the Chamber of the city of Mariana and newspapers found in Arquivo Público Mineiro, in Biblioteca Nacional and in Biblioteca do Arquivo Nacional in Rio de Janeiro were consulted. The analysis of such large assortment of documents involved the theoretical-methodological propositions of English historian Edward Palmer Thompson and the analytical perspectives suggested by some Italian historians, known as micro history. The study revealed that the relation between the inhabitants of the city of Mariana and its local public primary school was permeated by the social-political conflicts that occurred in the city following the political independence of Brazil; featuring local parents claiming for schools that took their interests and perspectives into consideration. |
