Resumo: The present work, which received the title Telenovelas of Brazil: a historical-discursive study, aims to be a study on the iconic and verbal language of Brazilian telenovela, from the perspective of Discourse Analysis. Our goals were to investigate the telenovela discourse in Brazil, supporting by its history, its discursive genre and its narrativity, as well as to analyze the social and discursive imaginaries on the female body, in order to verify and understand the reason of this representation, in three different epochs. Our corpus was constituted by 4 telenovelas aired by Rede Globo of Television from the 70s to 90s a) Irmãos Coragem (1st version), Janet Clairs telenovela, aired in the period from 8th June 1970 to 12th June 1971; b) Dancin' Days, Gilberto Bragas telenovela, aired from 10th July 1978 to 27th January 1979; c) Roque Santeiro, Dias Gomes telenovela, broadcasted in the period from 24th June 1985 to 22nd February 1986; d) Tieta, Aguinaldo Silvas telenovela, aired in the period from 14th August 1989 to 31st March 1990. This choice was based on the fact that we wanted to capture the popular culture of a golden era of the Brazilian telenovela. We focused on the study of the female bodies in these productions, using, mainly, the instruments of Discourse Analysis. We have seen how these bodies represent, sometimes in a caricatured way, an image of Brazilian society in the period. We sought in our analyzes and interpretations to adopt a discursive look colored by some anthropological shades. Thus, to carry out this study, we used as theoretical-methodological framework the Semiolinguistic Theory, which proposes the study of the social and cultural imaginaries, conjugating it to the concept of body, defined as social and cultural construction, as proposed by diverse anthropologists. We have seen that the representations of the female bodies in the analyzed telenovelas have some common points: the heroines from the 70s to 90s are white, heterosexual, thin (by the standards of the time), beautiful and young (or relatively young). The bodies are framed in pre-established molds proposed by the social. This study wanted to show that studied telenovelas tried, in one way or another, to follow the social / political / cultural and linguistic changes of the country.
