Resumo: Surgical procedures in animals is usually associated with some level of stress and pain. Hospitalization, often necessary for their full recovery, is one of the triggers of stress. This study aimed to evaluate the level of stress and pain of bitches submitted to ovariohysterectomy (OVH) during hospitalization and investigate the influence of hospitalization on the stress of these animals. Therefore, fifteen dogs of different races and ages were divided into two groups: eight animals under hospitalization conditions without surgery in the control group and seven animals subjected to ovariohysterectomy (OVH) and equal hospitalization conditions. Patients were evaluated by physiological, behavioral and hematological indicators, measurement of cortisol and glucose levels. From this study, it was concluded that the hospitalization of the animals was more relevant in the stress establishment than the surgical procedure (OVH) and the associated pain.
