As bibliotecas escolares comunitárias da Secretaria do Estado da Educação de Minas Gerais: análise de seu funcionamento em dez escolas de primeiro grau de Belo Horizonte

A study including ten state owned community libraries in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brazil), established by Project QESE-76 of the Secretaria de Estado de Educação/MG. The following techniques were used: a) questionnaire answered by library users; b) interview with school directors, teachers who works in the libraries, and the director of the Diretoria de Biblioteeas da Secretaria de Estado de Educacao/MG; c) analysis of records kept by the Diretoria de Bibliotecas. The main library users were found to be the students, and from the communities the main users are those living near the school. Reasons for use of the libraries were in the first place participation in library activities, in the second place recreation and then, in third place, study. Among the problems that constrain the community school library's mission of serving persons in the school and neighboring community are the hours the library can be open, school vacation time when the library is closed, personnel and library collection.
