Resumo: Investigation of industry libraries in Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH). It was found out that , from 328 industries , 298 do not have libraries against only 30 which possess libraries. From these, only 17 libraries are managed by qualified professionals. Three types of distinct questionaries were sent to the three above-mentioned categories, with the objective of analyzing some facts relevant to this study, such as : the reason for the existence of non-existence of library at the industries; whether the size of industries determines the existence of the library ; which sources of information and/or communication channels are utilized by industries without libraries; the situation of libraries managed by non-librarians; professional librarians performance in terms of administration , interaction with users and perception of the importance of the role they play. Results of the investigation revealed , that the size of industries does not determine the existence of libraries. Small and medium industries face difficulties derived from limited funds , lack of specialized personnel, restricted acess to modern technologies. These limitations make these industries incompetitive and unable to develop P&D. The non-existence of libraries seems, thus, to stem from the concurrence of factors such as follows. The use of information traditronally furnished by libraries is made in small scale. Respondents seem to have a theoretical and abstract idea of what information is about , thus disregarding the potentials of a library as a source of information useful to them. The research also revealed the important role which technological and scientific information nuclei or agencies can play in supporting small and medium industries. It was also found out that most libraries managed by librarians lack interaction with users. As a result libraries are not conferred real value on the part of industries and so their autonomy is largely restricted or almost none. Neverth ells , this study detected a discrepancy in the ways librarians perceive their performance, the importance of their role and their insertion in the industry activities. Some topics are suggested as themes for further research in industry libraries at Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte.
