Resumo: The main objective of this dissertation is to study the family firms reality and the processes by which successors are prepared to manage and own their business. The theoretical referees used as basis to the analysis are: 1) the family firms origins and definitions, and their models;2) the characterization of the succession process, the successors and their strategic functions; 3) research related to the cultural-economic-historical realities in Brazil and Portugal, especially those regarding family firms. A qualitative-descriptive study was conducted with semi-structured interviews: eight in Brazilian family business and seven in Portuguese family business, aged between 40 and 110 years, and with their management controllers going from first to fifth family generation. The results show similarities between Brazil and Portugal realities and the importance of two constructs to understand the family successors: their competencies and the separation between property and management. The conclusions reinforce the importance of family business to the national economies and the proposition of a model to analyse them in a more rational way.
