Resumo: The identification of specific attributes in the aroeira honey from north of Minas Gerais brought new perspectives of value aggregation to the regional apicultural production from the recognition of the Geographical Indication - GI. The strategy of honey differentiation implies structuring a sector characterized by commercialization in the informal or commodities market. In this context, the aim of this Masters thesis was to study the Aroeira Honey Geographical Indication (GI) in the north of Minas Gerais state as a social construction result from an arrangement involving organizations and institutions, which articulate themselves at a local and regional level. The methodology was built from the thematic of bibliographical reviews about Geographical Indication, Local Productive Arrangements, Social Market constructions and apiculture. In addition, beekeepers, associations presidents, and Aroeira honey support institutions, were interviewed and chosen by Simple Random Sampling, using structured scripts and researches about secondary data of honey production and exportation. The results pointed out an expressive producers number and their representative entities (associations and cooperatives) besides the support institutions such as development companies, technical assistance, training, buyers, as well as two governance structures in the Local Productive Arrangement. The Geographical indications procedures were in an early stage. Until now, it was concluded: the definition of the management entity, adjusting its status; meetings for discussions of GI concepts and issues related to the demarcation of the area covered by the Geographical Indication. The most significant challenges to obtain after and before GI recognition and operationalization are: Both beekeepers and their entities partners are unawareness about the size of the territory, composed of 54 municipalities, as well as the low participation of the beekeepers in the discussions about this topic. The associations and cooperatives of Aroeira Honey have been making efforts to get new trades for the fractionated products with sanitary, organic and Geographical Indication (GI) certifications. This effort will make possible to obtain better remuneration for the Aroeira Honey. Nevertheless, difficulties were observed to get it, especially when considering the availability of production by beekeepers who trust more in the relationship between businesspersons of the commodities market that make cash payment. To sum up, the apiculture activity is a relevant source of income for the farming family. The differential quality and the possibility of GI record were identified only after the researches. This strategy was lead by FUNED, CODEVASF, SEBRAE, and MAPA which already had a vision about the Aroeira Honey added value and territorial development. The territorial delimitation of Aroeira Honey Geographical Indication (GI) is not a consequence of beekeepers social construction, but its defined from honey characterizations results which are endorsed by institutions.
