Fundamental aspects that should be considered in elaborating policies for the preservation of library materials, specifically for the University Libraries. To achieve such a goal, we have proceeded to a theoretical appraisal on the subject, which has been compiled in a review of literature. Besides, a case study has been carried out, considering information acquired from the above mentioned appraisal. SuchI a case study was based on data concerning the UFMG Central Library, collected from literature, interviews and local observations. The results of the analysis of these data have afforded us to provide guidelines for the formulation and implementation of a preservation policy for the above mentioned library.
