The research compares the criteria of bibliographic rarity used by theBrazilian institutions which had published catalogue(s) of rare books in this century, as well as analyses the technical treatment and the conservation policy of those collections. The Brazilian National Library, through the PLANOR (National Program of Rare Books Conservation), is the main institution encharged of the dissemination of rarity criteria all over the country. These criteria, which include the historical period, the bibliological issues, the cultural value and the characteristics of the rare book, are based upon research at bibliographical and comercial information sources.
