Resumo: | The main objective of this study was to describe the trajectory of the Department of Computer Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in the period from 1976 to 2022. To achieve the specific objectives, a theoretical framework was created on the themes of universities, competencies and innovation. The thematic articulation favored the understanding of various aspects inherent to the object of study. A descriptive Case Study was carried out using the qualitative aspect of research. Data collection involved document analysis and semi-structured interviews with 16 research subjects, 14 managers and two administrative coordinators who worked at DCC/UFMG. The interviews were recorded for later transcription. For data processing, content analysis and thematic categorization were carried out. The research results indicated that, throughout its trajectory, the Department went through three distinct phases. The first of these included structuring initiatives related to the creation of the DCC. The second phase brought together actions focused on development. Finally, the third phase was marked by the consolidation of the Department. In general, the results indicated the relevance of the management vision on the part of the managers who had the support of a team of employees committed to the advancement of the Department. The research revealed the importance of several individual competencies manifested throughout the DCC's trajectory, with emphasis on leadership and planning. In relation to collective competencies, team cohesion and leadership at team level stood out. With regard to the innovative aspects inherent to the adopted management model, the results highlighted the importance of using innovative strategies, such as strategic planning, teaching staff training, administrative management, in addition to the importance of having resources available for the achievement of the objectives and goals proposed by the team. The research also sought to theoretically contribute to understanding the context of federal universities, with UFMG standing out, through the challenges of modernizing processes and structures in its units and departments, often influenced by the bureaucratic management model. |
