Resumo: The syntactic variation of the absence-presence of the definite article before proper nouns, namely, anthroponymy and toponymy, is analyzed in the casual language of rural inhabitants from Abre Campo and Matipó, in the state of Minas Gerais, in the places named Pouso Alto and Córrego dos Lourenços respectively. In spite of being close to each other, these places show divergent standards in relation to this phenomenon: in the area of Abre Campo there is no predominant variant; while in the area of Matipó the presence of the definite article is the preferred one. The research assumes some methodological and theoretical assumptions ofSociolinguistics namely Labov (1972) and Milroy (1987) and Milroy (1992), in that language is seen as a variable and changeable phenomenon and must to be studied in its sociocultural context, since it as a social practice; also dialectological assumptions such as Rossis (1963), (1980) and Nascentess (1922) proposed for Brazilian Portuguese give support to our discussion. The description of the Noun Phrase follows Mendes (2000) and other who dealt with the same phenomenon; definitions of proper nouns are discussed according to Lyons (1977), Dick (1990) e Du Bois et alii (1998). A description of the collected Noun Phrases is carried out according to those authors, followed by their quantitative analysis. The research was carried out through a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of the corpus consisted of 8 interviews: 4 from Pouso Alto (Abre Campo), and 4 from Córrego dos Lourenços (Matipó); In these interviews occurred 2.105 Noun Phrases, 848 of which had proper nouns: namely 620 occurrences of anthroponymy and 228 of toponymy. In Abre Campo, as regards toanthroponymy, the absence of definite article (52%) is slightly higher than its presence (48%), having as responsible factors sex, age, and type of anthroponymy as well as degree of intimacy; on its turn toponymy shows a slightly higher presence of the definite article (52%), having as determinant factors age and the location of home place. In Matipó, in turn, with regard to anthroponymy, the presence of the definite article is dominant in 83% of the occurrences, having as determinant factors the genitive structure, sex, age, and degree of intimacy; with regard to toponymy none of the variants prevailed, showing a 50% for both thepresence and absence of the definite article.
