Resumo: This research aims to understand the relationship between cases of control (regulation and censorship) combined with selection and mediation practices of children's literature books developed by preschool teachers in Belo Horizonte. The increasingly rapid circulation of information through digital media, together with the arrival of the socalled "conservative wave", among other factors, has highlighted, in different media, evaluations of children's books. In these evaluations, the supposed effects of literary texts on the shaping of children's character and behavior are emphasized. In this research, we propose to map cases of control or censorship of children's literature books in Brazil; identify the conceptions of child and literature underlying the testimonies of teachers about their practices as early childhood educators; analyze their perceptions regarding acts of censorship of children's access to books and the possible impacts of these acts on book selection processes. This is a qualitative research, carried out in three axes: analysis of records in documents found in the digital Hemeroteca, academic works, and related documents that prove the control of children's books over the years; application of a form to know the profile of the participating teachers and conducting collective interviews with these professionals who work in preschools in the private and public networks of Belo Horizonte. Cases of control of books intended for children in Brazil, dated from 1850 to 2021, and semistructured interviews are analyzed. The analysis of the data collected through the documents found showed that censorship underestimates childhood by belittling children's comprehension and interpretation abilities. As for the teachers' testimonies, it was observed that censorship finds resonance in the traditionalism present in Brazilian society, which influences book selection and reading practices of preschool teachers.
