Resumo: The dancer is an artist with physical and psychological demands as high performances athletes and a professional of integral dedication, with a long formation period. The dancers present high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries. The studies showed that dancer healths risk factors still conflicting and inconclusive, with little emphasis in the dynamics of the work process. The objective of the present study was to know the elements of the health and illness process and their relationships with the professional dancers work, under theseworkers perspective. A transversal, qualitative study was accomplished, with a sample composed by the 22 professional dancers of a company of the contemporary dance of Minas Gerais. Initially a participant observation was conducted for an approach of the researcher with the dancers in their context. A questionnaire was applied to characterize these dancers, focused in the musculoskeletal injuries and also applied a free list to identify the elements of the cultural domain. After data tabulation from the lists and questionnaires, a focal group was performed, to discussthe relationships between health and work. With the collected data, an analysis for triangulation of methods was performed, crossing the quantitative data from the questionnaire, the focal group, the cultural domain and from the literature presuppositions. The actors of this process define themselves as artists, dancers, interpreters and workers and these categories are overlapped and distinct. The dancers manifested great diversity of elements from the health and illness process: aspects of the organization, the management, the environment, the recognition, the works relations, psychological features, individual characteristics, the injury and the health care. The major part of the described elements has a strong relationship with the work, indicating the importance of including such aspects in the relative studies about dancer's health.
