Resumo: This study aims to estimate the healthy life expectancy of elderly Brazilians between 1998-2003 and 2003-2008. The method used for the calculation of healthy life expectancy is the intercensal, developed by Guillot & Yu (2009), which allows to estimate the unconditional and conditional healthy life expectancy. The information required for the application of the method was obtained from PNAD 1998, 2003 and 2008, and from Mortality Tables prepared by IBGE for the years 2001 and 2006. The definition of health status is based on inability to perform the Activities of Daily Living. The results suggest a process of extension of morbidity throughout the decade analyzed, with a decline in the proportion of total life expectancy lived as active for both men and women. Moreover, the average time lived by an elderly varies substantially in relation to its initial health status, in which the active life expectancy is greater for currently active elderly than for elderly with functional disabilities.
