Resumo: | Thirty-eight diarrheic and 34 normal calves, aging 4 to 60 day-old, belonging to 20 dairy herds from Para de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were studied. The methodology for isolating and the frequency of thermotolerant Campylobacter from diarrheic and normal calves, the cytotoxin production and the antimicrobial sensitivity of the isolated strains were tested. CSM was superior to the other procedures tested for isolating Campylobacter, but three strains, from normal calves, were only isolated after enrichment in CSME. The procedure CSM + CSME were able to isolate 39 (100,0%) strains of Campylobacter sp and were significantly ( p < 0,001) better than SKM + SKME (46,15%). There was no significant difference in the frequency of thermotolerant Campylobacter and of cytotoxin production by Campylobacter sp from diarrheic and normal calves. However the frequency of cytotoxic C. jejuni from diarrheic calves was near significancy (p = 0,07) when compared to cytotoxic C. jejuni from normal calves. Resistance to ampicilin (10,26%), to penicilin (89,74%), to sulfametoxazol + trimethoprim (59,97%) and to tetracycline (25,64%) were observerd in Campylobacter isolates. Some strains were intermediary resistent to kanamycin. |
