Resumo: Following the return of research tendencies searching for acustical improvements on the clarinet, begun in the 50´s, this study strives to focus its scientific investigation on the influence and importance of the barrel in structuring the tone quality of the clarinet. Four different models of barrels were used in this study, three of them produced by the author, in which seven different parameters related to tone quality, formed the basis for classification. Through auditory testing using MEDS software and later the methodological tool MDS (Multidimension Scaling), two-dimensional graphs were generated, spatially representing the similarities/differences of tonal parameters between the barrels. Upon careful analysis of these results, it was concluded that the experimental models built by the author singularly distinguish themselves from the commercial model in a great majority of parameters, thus confirming the performance tests performed prior to those done in connection with this study.
