Resumo: Today's technological innovation points to the need to modernize the practice of cataloging. Norms, standards and procedures for document representation need to be reviewed to serve the user who uses, in his daily life, diversified technological resources to get information, have fun, work and obtain services. In this context, there are great challenges for cataloging, which must be able to represent documents in different formats and languages. There is, therefore, the need for technological restructuring of traditional online catalogs, so that they support new technologies. In the scenario of emerging technologies, the RDA Standard: Resources Description and Access appears to replace the Revised Second Edition Anglo American Cataloging Code – AACR2R. This standard is based on conceptual models of the entity-relationship type, whose purpose is to enable the fulfillment of user tasks. The objective of this study is to identify cataloging principles of the AACR2R code and the RDA standard capable of promoting the completion of the “explore” task by the end user. By verifying the relationships established between works of printed literature and their film adaptations, it aims to provide discoveries and indicate possibilities of access to this user. This study has a qualitative approach, and is exploratory according to its objective. The question proposed to guide the study is: How do the principles of the AACR2R cataloging code and the RDA standard promote the accomplishment of the “explore” task, allowing the end user to recover and access printed works of literature and their film adaptations based on research in online catalogs? In order to answer it, the relationships established between works of printed literature and their filmic adaptations in online catalogs of four institutions were researched, of which two use the AACR2R code for cataloging, and the other two use the RDA standard. The study environment was represented by the following institutions: Library System of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Integrated Search Portal of the University of São Paulo, OMNIS Search Tool of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul and online catalog WorldCat, from Online Catalog Library Centre. The sample consisted of six works of printed literature, of which evidence of relationships connecting them to their film adaptations was verified. From the observation of these relationships, the possibility of providing the fulfillment of the “explore” task and promoting discoveries to the end user in their searches in online catalogs was perceived. The results of the study showed that both catalogs that use AACR2R cataloging code guidelines and those that use RDA present possibilities to connect different entities. However, it was found that catalogs that use the RDA standard, based on conceptual models of the entity-relationship type, present modern and appropriate technological resources to promote connections, resulting in alternatives for the end user's search.
