This work proposes a reflection on the relationship between the University, specifically the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (ICA / UFMG), the society of its surroundings and its role in the development of the North of Minas Gerais, in the period from 2008 to 2017. The main objective is to verify possible contributions of the ICA / UFMG, by means of its classic functions (teaching, research and extension) in the development of the North of Minas Gerais. The methodology used consisted of a qualitative approach, complemented with statistical data, configuring itself as a survey of data (SURVEY). Part of a theoretical apparatus that subsidizes about trajectory and discussion of the functionality of the ICA / UFMG. Next, public administration is discussed in a general way, the relation of public goods and private goods, the concepts of development and your interface with the university, the social actors and the university at the moment, inserting their classic functions. The results showed that the ICA / UFMG is contributing to regional development in relation to education has been, a qualified formation of young people, as critical and participative subjects, was verified, and that these are mostly from the Northern region of Minas Gerais. The research developed in the ICA fosters the various areas of knowledge that, in line with the vocation of the region, promote the strengthening of agricultural production and the social reproduction of the inhabitants. The extension has been the flagship of the ICA on the bridge with the outside world, as well as in the Web of relations in the internal. In addition, the ICA's performance in various fields of interaction and its relationship with several municipalities in the region has streamlined qualitative transformations people residing in the region. However, we can not fail to mention the absence of their participation and involvement in several rural communities and a closer relationship with the private sector.
