Resumo: Women's work suffers from the implications of a sexual division of labor that has been constructed in a complex way throughout the history of societies. Despite the increasing achievements made by women, it is still clear that they face difficulties in their work that are a reflection of these historical inequalities. When thinking about the reality of organizations, to these aspects is added the dissemination of the ideology of excellence in current work spaces. This logic, which propagates precepts of excellent performance, appears as an ideal to be achieved by all people, forming a scenario of increasing competition and individualism. This idea reaches health organizations, which carry out work of a particular nature, associated with care. It is understood that nursing professionals, who represent the majority within this area, are thus involved in a world of work that brings implications arising from the sexual division of labor and the ideology of excellence, in a field of work whose activity is full of own complexities. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the repercussions of the ideology of excellence on the experiences of nurses who work in private hospitals in the city of São Luís- MA. Regarding the method, qualitative research was carried out, using the constructions of Work Psychodynamics as a theoretical basis. Nine nurses working in private hospitals in São Luís-MA were interviewed. To analyze the collected data, Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis was used. It was found that nurses have a daily life marked by pressures related to achieving organizational indicators, a fast pace of work and overload. It was noticed that there are expectations and demands related to the historical construction of the profession and the sexual division of labor. Finally, it was found that the pleasure-suffering dynamic experienced by nurses involves factors such as pleasure in carrying out care work and recognition on the part of those assisted, as well as the suffering caused by the rigorous organizational dynamics and the high expectations placed on professionals.
