Resumo: To improve the performance of the mathematics discipline, it is proposed to elaborate a methodology for the teaching of Mathematics in Basic Education in Maranhão, considering the challenges in Brazilian education, internal challenges and external challenges. Knowing these challenges, renowned mathematicians from higher education used methodologies during their careers that demanded greater dedication and commitment from students and professors. Omar Catunda and Elza Gomide are notorious in this context. After a qualitative research with students graduating from the 9th year of elementary school, data were obtained used to evaluate the Mathematics subject in our schools. After presenting these in graphs, they were applied to verify some qualitative criteria in the Elza-Catunda sense and its geometric interpretation and a lesson plan was prepared to teach polynomials and graph representation using Geogebra.
