Resumo: This thesis focuses on the discussion of the cultural production of Bumba Meu Boi in São Luís do Maranhão, in particular, the Boi de Maracanã, one of the oldest groups in the state. Analyzing the socio-cultural process of elaborating knowledge, categories and practices, as well as the social and cultural relations that are given in this production, and based on the studies of authors from Sociology and Anthropology, the following case study presents the historical context of the Bumba Meu Boi in Maranhão, which left in its past the position of being pursued by politics and the colonial elite and reached one of the highest spaces of power representation in the state, which as a hybrid manifestation, generated in the cradle of popular culture, is dynamic and imbued with its own creativity, which does not remain restricted or exempt from the productive context, generated from the various actors and processes, from the incorporation and manifestation of art, culture and religiosity in Maranhão. Such axes are listed and form an artistic plurality in which the roles and relationships built are multiple and go beyond the sphere of celebration.
