Resumo: The research aims the analysis of the possibilites of popular culture in integration to basic education, in the perspective of edification of identity and citizenship. It uses the qualitative analysis of the object employing the fo l roups‟ techniques, applied, in this case, with students of a basic education Unity from the municipal network of São Luís, located in a community prominently m rk by th M r nh o‟s popul r culture. Discusses the concept of culture and popular culture e as consequence, the pos t on of popular culture n n ol b r l ont xt n n th M r nh o‟s s n r o, wh r t n b foun str t on t on w th th st t ‟s pol t s In th s m r t on, it discusses the concepts of identity and citizenship as instrument to the resear h‟s clause in popular culture associated to basic education ticking the relations between the subject and the object. The methodology that was used enabled the comprehension of notions of fields, space and time, that are used here in the history of formation of the neighborhood e its tradition then to confront the dominant culture, popular culture and propose its use in education.
