Resumo: This work identifies the strategies adopted by a settlement cooperative, based on the influence ofelements of institutional nature. In order to do so, an attempt was made to accomplish a study of its constitution process and the identification and analysis of phases of the transformation of its structure. The study object went to Cooperativa Agrícola Novo Sarandi - COANOL, of Fazenda Annoni's settlement, located in Sarandi/RS. The adopted methodology was based on a qualitative research through the case study. For the collection of the data the technique of documental analysis and semi-structured interviews were used, starting from a route previously established and tested. It was observed that the organization is influenced strongly by elements ofinstitutional nature. From the initial apprenticeship ofits development strategic arrangements are configured that reflect the pressures exercised by its institutional environment - The group of conceptions and structures of the Landless Movement (MST). The strategic process ofthe cooperative organization takes place along a continuum where on a side tliere are the strategies of more deliberative stamp and on other the most emergent ones. In the case of COANOL, there is a prevalence of more emergent character strategies, characterizing the one that Mintzberg calls an organization deliberately emergent. Although the cooperative has a concem with the efficiency and the demand for its production, this is not a fundamental considered factor in the orientation of the operation of the organization, prior to this, there is the incorporation ofguidelines defined previously in its institutional fíeld, and that contribute to the survival and legitimation ofits activities in the context in which it is inserted.
