Resumo: The issues related to the alterity of individuals are linked to psychosocial problems of extensive complexity. In the 20th century, Lithuanian-French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas proposed an ethics opposing the individualistic and totalizing mode that underpins the modern culture of subjectivity. This study aims to demonstrate, from a theoretical and literary standpoint, through the analysis of narrative discourse, the applicability of Emmanuel Levinas' philosophical proposal of Ethics of Alterity in Jorge Amado's novel Captains of the Sands. To achieve this, the main methodological approach adopted will involve the application of relevant aspects of the discourse analysis theory by French critic and literary theorist Gérard Genette, with a focus on the typology of the narrator and narrative focalization, examined through categories of narrative mode and voice.
