Resumo: The purpose of this research is realize how the Northeastern of Brazil and local people are represented in the media (Folha de São Paulo) and in popular poetry (Patativa do Assaré). For this, a bibliographical reviews was carried out in order to situate the media vehicles and Northeastern popular poetry within their theoretical universe. Thompson (2011), Medeiros (2011), Charaudeau (2004; 2006) and Ecosteguy (2003) were part of the composition to reflet on communication vehicles as producers of meanings, symbols and social representations. To understand the concepts and practices of popular culture and poetry, the follwing authors were used: Cantel (1993), Cuche (1999) Ribeiro (1987) and Arantes (1982). After these theoretical reflections, the french discourse analyses were carried out in twenty poems by Patativa do Assaré and twenty articles by Folha de São Paulo that talked about the universe of the Northeastern of Brazil. Aftter the investigations, it was possible to notice six preferred guidelines in each corpus when talinkg about the subjet and nuances in theirs discursive constructions. While the newspaper tookk a more pessimistic approach to the environmental characteristics of the Northeastern of Brazil and presented the social problems of the people in a more romanticized and coformed way, Patativa’s poetry cast a more positive look at the natural aspects of its region and shows indignation and demanded justice to the people, for their history of exploration.
