This text aims to analyze a possible modernization theory in Darcy Ribeiro’s thought, exploring his concepts of Historical Update and Reflective Modernization. Based on his works The Civilizational Process and The Brazilian People, we intend to verify to what extent this theory has approached a philosophy of history of a speculative nature. Considering Willian Dray’s definition of speculative philosophy, we investigate indications of teleological characteristics in Ribeiro’s reflections and its association with a Latin American utopia. Thus, our intention is to find the specificity of the modern Latin American being by investigating these elements in the Brazilian anthropologist works.
