This thesis proposes a complete study of PMD (polarization mode dispersion) with bibliography and exploratory character. In this way was realized a deeply study in the phenomenon composed by a variety of topics related to PMD. It begin for the basic part of the phenomenon, it mathematical modeling and the principal mathematical methods of measurements, even in the time domain and in the frequency domain. Another topic aborded, which has a need of the previous topics, was the PMD compensation, that is very difficult in the way that have some random characteristics. The exploratory part was covered by measurements realized together with inmetro researchers verifying the variation of the PMD as the evolution of the temperature in the device under test.
