Resumo: Great part of the underground storage tanks at gas stations are made by steel, without protective coating, or any other protection against corrosion. The substitution of these kinds of tanks has been occurring since 2000, when the law that claims for underground storage tanks with protection against corrosion at gas stations was promulgated. This is a serious problem, as most of the underground gasoline leakages is due to corrosion at underground storage tanks at gas stations. Gasoline contaminated soil has been identified as one of the largest risks to water quality as the various phases the gasoline presents whenever in contact to the soil. Besides, the hydrocarbon vapors phase poses explosions and fire threat in subsurface buildings at the neighborhood of the leakage. The media has been presenting several cases of environmental contamination and accidents caused by gasoline leakage at underground tanks, and it has also been divulging amazing numbers related to underground tanks that need substitution, and related to costs of remediation technologies for gasoline contaminated sites. This research aims to divulge and discuss corrosion problems at underground storage tanks and environmental contamination; the laws that treat the projects, modifications and operations at gas stations; as well, inform the owners of gas stations and the population about the damage that this kind of leakage can cause to the people and to the environment. This research also aims to present a project development of an alternative system to protect underground storage tanks against corrosion.
