This work undertakes a study of the labyrinthine reality enveloping the characters of In the penal colony (1919) and The trial (1925), by Franz Kafka, Life and times of Micheal K (1983), by J. M. Coetzee, and Benjamim (1995), by Chico Buarque. The issue of name, the sombre atmosphere, the tragicalness of the characters and the social and inner walls create a semantic field of oppression and fear that lurk in the conscience of the individuals. It is, therefore, a study of the manner in which the environment of fear and darkness characterised by both repressive systems that of apartheid and that of the Brazilian dictatorship, as well as Kafka s sombre environments influence the life and times of the characters. The considerations were oriented by the studies of Mikhail Bakhtin when relating to dialogic, Michel Foucault when relating to the disciplinary dispositions, and Georg Lukács when relating to the narration and intellectual physiognomy of the artistic characters.
