The growing demand for measurement results of known and acceptable origins by customers requires more and more attention to metrological traceability. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to use reference elements standards and/or reference materials in method calibration and validation to assure a safe traceability chain. Metrological traceability is an essential aspect for the comparability of analytical results. The general objective of this exploratory research was to exam the practices adopted by the water analysis laboratories on the use of reference materials, focusing on their certificates and their use. The information obtained from the laboratories, by means of a questionnaire, were tabulated. A bibliographical research was also performed in order to tabulate the traceability requirements of the water analytical methods and make it possible to compare them to the practices used by the laboratories. The results produced an overview of the use of reference materials by the group of laboratories studied, which allowed to propose to the General Accreditation Coordination (Cgcre/Inmetro) short and medium terms actions to support the laboratory accreditation activity.
