This essay presents the study of case of the implantation of one of the environmental indicators implanted in the Petrobras refinery area. The Iridicator in question is the sulphur oxides emissions (SOX). In function ofthe characteristics ofthis indicator and the industria in question, the work will describe the refining process, and references about environmental indicators, using as source of important reference, the essays of Barcelios (2002), that proposes a set of sociaI-economicaI-environmenta indicators to the Petrochemical Complex of Camaçari. This esay describes ali the stages that ied to the execution of SOx measurements including the presentation of the methodology for the elaboration of the SOx emissions inventory and explains the necessity of the detailing of the calculation, important because of the use of the pointer to guide investments. In the end of the work it is presented the results of three years of implantation of the indicator and an exampie of the use of the calculation model to evaLuate the evolution of the emissions of a refinery that will be modernized. This indicator importance increased due to the trend of progressive reduction of amounts of sulphur in gasoline and diesel ou at Brazilian metropolitan areas. The lack of an adequate tool to measure Petrobras refineries could result in undesirable increase of pollutant emissions
